Legal Question in Personal Injury in Washington
I was in a car accident where the other driver was at fault. My car was totaled. Because I am not familiar with all the legal aspects, I found a lawyer to help me with all the paperwork, etc. After two weeks of nothing from the lawyer, I contacted them to see when I may expect my check from the other insurance company and was told they haven't done a thing yet. I want to termiante my contract with this lawyer and wanted to know how I can defend myself from charges
they may present to me for service they provided.

First thing I'd suggest is that you confront the law firm -- in a pleasant way -- with your concerns. It's possible, for example, that they left the resolution of the property damage claim to you, and you presumed they represented you for both the injury claim and the property. There may be any number of misunderstandings that may exist. They SHOULDN'T exist, since it's the job of the lawyer to communicate clearly. But you may be surprised that there wasn't much they were supposed to do in that time frame.
Just in the interest of fairness, I'd go back to the lawyer or law firm. Tell them your concerns, and see what you think. In the scheme of things, 2 weeks isn't a lot of time for very much to happen beyond contacting the appropriate insurance companies and getting the property damage claim started, if they were going to. For all we know, it's the insurance companies dragging their feet. If, after you visit with your lawyer you still aren't happy with them, then go to another lawyer, and have them contact the first lawyer to fire them right away. New lawyer should discuss and/or eliminate any charges of the first lawyer, if indeed they weren't warranted.
Good luck,
