Legal Question in Real Estate Law in Washington

Home seller backing out

A neighbor agreed to sell me a house last summer. We agreed on base price, and agreed to remodel the house together, adding material costs to the base price. We drew up a contract, but agreed not to finalize/sign it until we knew what the final/full price would be.

We worked together on the house daily, from July to early October. Now that the house is remodeled, he has decided he's not going to sell the house, but let his daughter live there.

Is there any way I can make him sell me the house that I've spent 4 months working on?

Re: Home seller backing out

The short answer is no. There are a variety of reasons for this, chief among them is that contracts for the sale of real property require a written contract. Oral contracts in such a situation are generally unenforceable.

However, you are entitled to compensation for your labor, since it was provided in consideration of the neighbor selling you the home. I will give you a free consultation if you call our office, and we can see what you may be entitled to collect from your neighbor.
