Must a bankruptcy petition be filed by an attorney, or may an individual file a petition for themselves?

You can file it yourself, but I wouldn't recommend it. It's not that expensive to hire a qualified bankruptcy attorney and ...

If you make a mistake, the Court can:

1. Take all your property

2. Dismiss your bnankruptcy

3. Charge additional filing fees for every correction.

Aren't you filing bankruptcy to have your creditors stop hassling you? If you represent yourself, the creditors can continue to contact you on the pretext of obtaining info on the bankrupcy.

An experienced lawyer is the best bargain you'll ever get. And I don't practice in your state, so I have nothing to gain by telling you this.
