Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Wisconsin

Debt Collectors

Five years ago I lived in Wisconsin. When I moved to Florida, I had a $2,000 debt with the electric company. Even though they had my new Florida address, they never contacted me for payment. I assumed they had written it off. Today I got a very harrassing call from a collection agency and they want me to pay this up front. I offered them $20/month and they laughed at me. I am unable to pay this debt. 1) How long can a creditor keep trying to collect a debt? 2) What action can a collection agency take to get me to pay this? Can they take me to court? Can they wage garnish me?

Re: Debt Collectors

1. Do not acknowledge the debt, especially in writing.

2. Five years from the date of the debt or last payment or from last acknowledgment.

3. Intimidate you to pay. To sue, you would first be contacted by an attornet licensed in Florida.

4. If a judgment is obtained against you, then non-exempt assets would be subject to levy in order to satisfy the judgment.

You should consult with counsel for answers that pertain directly to you.
