Is it legal for me to post flyers up in town warning people of a sex offenders release in the area?

It could be alright, but you need to check local ordinances for the posting, and state agencies, to see whether the state recognizes a privacy right or a non-discrimination right for ex-offenders. You might also want to hire counsel, to make sure you're not getting yourself into something dangerous.
