Legal Question in Employment Law in Wisconsin

Forced to attend company function on my time.

Supervisor is trying to force me to go to the company picnic. I am hourly and must clock out for the picnic. The rest of employees are salaried so it does not cost them wages to go. I can not afford to lose any wages.

The supervisor states that I must attend!

I am contacting you for a friend and not myself because the friend does not have Internet access.

Thank you.

Re: Forced to attend company function on my time.

Hello,

It seems to me that the company cannot force you to attend the picnic, but they could fire you if you do not. In fact, they could fire you for not having a good attitude about the picnic, or they can even fire someone for going to the picnic. In short, in Wisconsin you can be fired for any reason or no reason -- except if you have a written contract, or if you are fired for taking family leave or for certain invalid reasons such as race, religion, age or sex. These are just some general comments -- not legal counsel to rely on. I cant give you a firm opinion because I am not their attorney and do not have all the facts. If she wants a legal opinion to rely on, she needs to visit a lawyer. Best wishes, Mark J. Mahoney
