Legal Question in Civil Litigation in California

Dog attacked ---- Vet Bills

Our family dog was attacked by an unleashed dog at the public park. This unleashed dog was with its teenage owner. We found out where the owner of the dog lived and have asked the teenager's mother and the dog's official owner to pay for the vet bill. Now the dog owner has retained an attorney, so now we want to know what the next step to take. We were not the ones who had a loose dog at the park and we didn't run from the scene. All we want is for the dog owner to pay the vet bills. Can you recommend what type of lawyer could best offer legal advice as the vet bills fall under ''Small Claims''.

Re: Dog attacked ---- Vet Bills

Generally, attorneys are not allowed in small claims court. So, you will be looking for an attorney who will handle a low value civil case and potentially even civil litigation if it is possible that this will go to trial. You also need an attorney who is familiar with the filing a Civil case of Limited Jurisdiction (limited dollar amount).

If you want an attorney to represent you in court, then it may be most cost effective for you to look for a local attorney. The State Bar may be helpful in your search. However, if you just want the owner to pay a vet bill, then it will not cost you more to get advice from any California attorney. It may even be possible get that attorney to draft a letter for you regarding the bill and speak with their counsel regarding getting the bill paid.

Please feel free to contact me for more information, for advice on counsel, or if you would like my assistance in settling your claim.

Good Luck!
