Harassment

I am a graduate of an osteopathic medical school currently completing a 1 year medical internship. I am at the mercy of my program director who is holding my future career in medicine hostage at the moment. My performance is being compared to the other interns in the program which has been said to be below average and problematic. I am cooperative and willing to work on these issues and have been improving on the areas that have been brought to my attention. Perhaps not up to the expectations of the program director however. A big part of the problem is that my program director utilizes intimidation tactics, insults and aggressive communication in order to teach. He has called me an idiot, clueless amongst other insults on many occasions. When I am spoken to in this way, I shut down and feel humiliated and left without much confidence to step up to the plate. I feel this is counterproductive and making it more difficult for me to improve. I work better when I am encouraged, praised and spoken to with respect and dignity, as most people would. There have been witnesses to his abuse and he admits it himself. What are my rights here? If he fires me based on my lack of performance, he could ruin my career!

Not to put all of the burden on your shoulders, but it seems that you might benefit from some kind of personal (not legal) assistance with helping you deal with very difficult individuals. Surely, in your career, you will meet people far worse than this boorish supervisor.
