I was accused of stealing a pair of earrings from my ex boyfriend's mother. He lives with her and I stayed there once in awhile. The police want to talk to me.

If the police have enough evidence to charge you, they will. A message from the police to talk with you is basically this: "We don't have enough evidence to charge you yet. Will you come by and give us the evidence we need to arrest you?" Police don't get a gold star for getting at the truth. For them, a case is "solved" when they make an arrest. If the defendant later convinces a jury that they are "not guilty", the police don't admit they were "wrong": the jury was wrong, a guilty defendant "got away", a guilty defendant's lawyer confused the jury.

Also, a classic ploy of police is to get you to come to them so that they can charge you without ever getting out of their cars. Watch for it. Don't go. Get a lawyer.
