This is a legal doctrine in which parents are held liable for the automobile wrecks [most common, although there can be other applications] of their children when the child is on a mission for the family such as driving to the grocery store, other errands, etc.

It arises most often when a child is driving a family car but is not a named insured. It is used to gain access to the parent's insurance policy on the automobile.

There are other applications, but this is the most usual.
