Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Connecticut

My husband is disabled and has been for almost 20 years. We are now in a situation where he is being sued for his dead mother's nursing home balance, while her application for state assistance is still pending. We live in Connecticut, and did have power of atorney while she was alive. She had no estate as her only assest was her home and it was signed over to my husband under the disabled child law. He does live in the houseand has for 1 1/2 years as he took care of his father who was also ill, as our home is inaccesable to him. We have drained our children's college funds to pay for funerals of both of them, and all money she recieved when he died in March of 2010 was given directly to the Nursing home. All the income we have is SSD, so how are we supposed to pay the bill. THe facility is saying we assumed financial responsibility when she was admitted, and that is a whole different story that has become a big issue in all of this. They accepted her from the hospital, then called to say she had no Medicare left to pay for it. We were literally backed against the wall and agreed to pay for the one month she was supposed to be there, or they were not going to keep her. Correct me if I am wrong, but is there not a law that protects us from this type of action as well.
