Engagement Ring

A man residing in California falls in love with woman residing in Florida. Asks her to marry him while visiting her in Florida, purchases and gives her an engagement ring while visiting her in Florida. Returns home to California, the relationshiop falls apart and man asks for his $7,000.00 engagment ring back. Ring was stolen from womans Florida residence so she cannot return. Man sues woman for fraud in California. Question: Who actually owns the ring? Is woman liable for expense of ring if not returned to man? In what state is venue for legal proceedings?

1. Since everything occurred in Florida, California has no jurisdiction.

2. If you can prove the ring was stolen (police report), it is impossible for you to return it. This is a valid defense in Florida.
