Legal Question in Civil Litigation in Florida

invalid lien placement

a man who had a contract to buy my mother's house in oct 2003,but could not get the banks or credit unions to finance it for him in a years time and was told the property was no longer for sale per her children. During a 12 month stay without paying any rent he proceeded to rremoldel the kitchen and two bathrooms to his taste....no permits were pulled and no licensed contractors involved. He's since put a construction lien on the property for 20,000 and we are now in civil court about the matter as he's claiming my mother gave him the ok to improve ( unjustly enrich) the property by signing a power of attorney over to her in 2 handwritten statements...but these were clearly for speaking on her behalf in downtown miami to clear or at least reduced some code enforcements liens that were on her property. these 2 power of attorney letters are the ''proof'' he and his lawyer states gives him the right to place a lien and sue us in court which by the way includes me with my mother even though i am not listed on the property, but since i'm a ''doctor'' i quess they had to name me in the suit also...they didn't name my sister , but she works at the waffle house. Can you tell me if a person who did work himself has the right to place a lien
