Legal Question in Family Law in Iowa

I am trying to clarify who gets to claim which dependent for tax purposes. My wife divorced 8 years ago and at the time she got to claim child A and he got to claim child B. Well child A is now 18 and according to the divorce decree we are suppose to alternate child B but it is not very clear on who gets to claim child B first. This is what it says:

"The parties shall each have one tax deduction. When the oldest child is no longer a minor, the petitioner shall have the deduction. The respondent shall have the deduction in the alternate years."

My wife is the respondent, her ex is the petitioner. Child A turned 18 in December of 2013. Child A also lives 100% of the time at our house and is a full time student.

I'd suggest you take this up with your family law attorney. Any change is going to require a modification of the custody and support order.
