Legal Question in Criminal Law in Louisiana

Hello,

Recently was arrested for identity theft, but I'm not sure if that was fair.

A couple of months ago I had a vacation planned. I had trip insurance. My Mother who lives with me became very sick and dying ( have dated documents to prove it), so I was forced to cancel the trip. Being unrational at the time and upset, I signed a doctors' name to a sick excuse for myself in order get my trip money back, but they denied the claim and have been agressively pursuing this identity theft charge. All I did was sign his name. I don't know him and did not take anything from him; just signed the doctors note. Is that identity theft? I know it was wrong. I have no criminal background. I am very honest. The situation with my Mother was what caused my irrational decision.

Is there anything I can do?

Do you think they would drop the charges if I explain this to them?

You need to meet with the District Attorney and explain the circumstances. If nothing else, you may qualify got a pretrial diversion program or lesser charge.
