Legal Question in Civil Litigation in Massachusetts

I was recently accused by a person that my girlfriend was house/dog sitting for of taking some items from the house. I did not take the items and my girlfriend knows i did not take the items. The issue that arrose is the person who owns the house is a good friend of my girlfriends and he is also a cop. He used his authority as an officer of the law to look into my back ground and made it a point to call my girlfriends mother and air all of the "dirty laundry" that he "found". I have never been arrested for any crime other than a few moving violations several years ago. But he thought it releavant and thought it necessary to tell my girlfriends mother, father, brother, and another close friend of the family. All while making accusations that i had stolen items from his home. How legal/illegal were his actions in this matter? He has threatened me on the phone with legal action and has harrassed my girlfriends family about this matter. My reputation in the eyes of her family has been severely tarnished. What course of action if any can i take? Thank you.

While you might be able to sue him for things like invasion of privacy, slander, defamation, etc., you better be careful -- he can easily seek criminal charges against you. And if that happens, your problems have only begun, regardless of where the truth might be.

Retain an attorney to determine if it is in your best interest ti sue him for libel and slander. Good Luck!
