Legal Question in Legal Ethics in Michigan

''Stolen'' Car?

My car broke down in July of last year and my boyfriend's uncle towed it to his grandparent's house. I had been ''borrowing'' this car from my own grandparents. They had sold it to me (for VERY LITTLE money) and it's legally mine, but I was supposed to give it back when I wasn't going to use it anymore. I transferred the plates to a different car that we were using because I didn't have the money to fix the broken car. That car ended up breaking down also and I couldn't get it towed, so I'm guessing it got impounded. No one has contacted me to say that there was a problem with keeping the car at my boyfriend's grandparent's. No one said that I had to do something with it or they would. I found out that they SOLD the car. So the plates are off, and the registration is expired. I think if I go to the Secretary of State they can print me a copy of the title, right? I'm thinking that I want to take this issue to small claims court, but I'm not exactly sure what my case would be. It wasn't legal for them to sell it without my permission or without contacting me first about the situation, was it?

Re: ''Stolen'' Car?

The car wasn't stolen, it was left on their premises. You can take them to small claims court to recover the value of the vehicle.
