Legal Question in Traffic Law in Michigan

K-9 Unit Searches

I was pulled over last week, fornot wearing a seatbelt. I admitted to not wearing it. The officer than asked to run his dog around my car. I said no, and the officer claimed to smell marijuana. I admitted to having periphenalia, and handed it right over to the officer. After all was said and done, the officer told me that the next time I am pulled over I can expect to be searched and there's nothing I can do about it. I recieved no charges or written warnings, I have a 100% clean record, with no tickets or anything. Is he right? If I get pulled over again do I have to let them search my car? And if not, what should I say to the officer if he/she were to say that I do not have a choice?

Re: K-9 Unit Searches

You asked "Do I have to let them search my car

You always must obey a police officer's commands.

To protect your rights, you may refuse the officer's request, but you may not do anything to prevent the search if your refusal is ignored.
