Paying a creditor once the debt goes to collection agency

Can you pay a credtitor the amount owed to them once the debt is sent to a collection agency ?

I would suggest that you contact the original creditor and ask if you may send payment directly to them? Sometimes a creditor will sell its account receivables to a third party (perhaps a "collection agency"), and then you would be directed to send payment to that third party. You are entitled to a copy of the legal document transferring your account to any such third party and you should obtain one for your own protection if that is in fact what happened in this case. In any event be sure to pay by check or in some way which leaves you with proof that you did pay in case you ever need it in the future.
