You are correct in supposing that you should have more than just a verbal statement. Your specific rights will depend on what your lease says, how many rental units there are, and possibly whether the unit is owner-occupied. Contact a lawyer in your area who does landlord/tenant law and ask for a consultation to go over your specific situation.
