Legal Question in Real Estate Law in New Jersey

My partner and I own a home in NJ (i.e., we both contribute to making the mortgage payment). When we purchased the home, the deed went into his name only. Our attorney told us that the title company would have "less problems" with that, since the mortgage was in his name. Now that we're in the house for four years and I am no longer a student, we want to add my name to the deed, for estate planning purposes. How do I go about this?

Just do a new Deed from partner to the two of you, explaining how you will take ownership. There should be some written agreement on shared responsibilities and obligations and covering what happens if relationship ends, or someone dies. Best is to have an attorney assist you, who is familiar with these documents. Contact me directly if you need assistance.
