Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in New York

Can a collections agency reage a debt?

I have a very old credit card debt of about $2000. It is over the 6 year statute of limitation but I am getting harrassing phone calls from the creditor stating that they are going to sue me because I made payments to the collection agency. If I am correct, they cannot reage this debt and sue me because the account has been delinquent and in collections already for 6 years. Is this correct and where can I find the law that states that?

The statute is 6 years from the date of the breach...or the date of the charge off...whichever is later.
