Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in New York

creditor harrassment

I rented a computer from a popular rent to own store. I paid $1300 and they said I still have a $800 balance. I was not informed that half of payments go towards merchandise.I paid all that money now I'm 3 weeks late they are requesting the computer back. I 'm refusing to give it back until I can send a payment. They have called my job, my friends and came to my house several times a day stating the police will be here at so and so time. I stole the computer they said I haven't finished paying for it so it belongs to them. They leave tags on the door threatening that the police will be here later or tommorrow. They also come to my house 8:00 am on saturday and left tag with a 9:00 am time on it. What can I do?

Re: creditor harrassment

First, don't think that the police are coming. The police are not going to help them collect a debt. What they will do is sue you and get a judgment.

Second, they are not allowed to threaten police action. That is illegal and you can sue them back for that violation of the 'Fair Debt Collection Act'.

Good luck.
