Legal Question in Family Law in New York

15 yrs ago I got married to a man who was very abusive and I left "escaped" is more like it just 1 yr later. It took another 13 yrs to finalize the divorce. It just became final in Dec 2010. Then 2 weeks ago I got an email from a woman who said she was married to the same man in 2003 and was also trying to get a divorce after "escaping". She now wants my help by sharing my paper work and going to court with her. Don't get me wrong I want to help but I'd rather not have to go to court and possibly see this man again. So my question is if her marriage was a "bigamist marriage" since he was still legally married to me than what steps does she have to take in order to be able to marry again? She's doing all this "pro se" and is being told she still has to get an annulment and go through this long process....including going to court and needing me to go also. Is that true?

I would agree. She would need an annulment since she was married at the same time you were married. I alos agree that she would have to use your paperwork to establish that your husband was married at the same time she was married. However, depending on the cirucmstance, you may be able to do this on "papers." In other words, your physical appearance in court may not necessarily be required.
