Legal Question in Family Law in New York

I am the custodial parent of a 17 year old child. My daughter's father told me he was "laid off" today and would be going on unemployment and therefor child support payments will have to reflect the change in income. Is this true? Or is he required to continue paying at the regular amount?

He must pay the court ordered support until he files a petition to modify his obligation and the court issues a new order.

If he engages in self-help by decreasing the support payments, you can file for contempt.
