Legal Question in Employment Law in New York

Wrongful Termination - My rights

To Whom It May Concern:

I was hired last year at a company as an Office Manager, and one of the big goals was to Project manage our construction for our new floor and complete the move.

I have completed the construction and the move, and now my manager is making statements like ''now the we are moved in, we don't need someone of you calliber and your education level to be in this role anymore .'' They have also been continuously harrassing me about my salary, and saying on many occassions that my salary if off the normal scale for this rile.Do they have the right to fire me if they want to reduce the role responsibility? Why are they telling me these things when they hired me at the rate in the first place? What am I supposed to do?

What rights do I have?

thank you,

concerned employee

Re: Wrongful Termination - My rights

It really depends on whether you have a written contract. If you don't you are an at will employee, and can be terminated for any legal reason.

Re: Wrongful Termination - My rights

The answers to your questions depend on whether you have an employment contract. New York is an employment-at-will state. This means that (provided the employer does not violate your federal or state civil rights), either you or the employer can terminate your employment at any time, with or without a reason if you do not have an employment contract. You should consult with an attorney to review the specific facts of your situation in order to protect your rights.
