the owner of the house i just rented wants to break our lease so he can move back into it. what can i ask for compensation?

There is no real answer - this is up to you and the owner. Ask what you think is fair would be my opinion. The owner can't evict you as long as you adhere to the lease so you can stay for the remainder of the lease term as long as you continue to pay rent and follow the guildelines in the lease. Of course, this could be an uncomfortable situation so if you don't care about moving out, then ask for whatever amount of time is reasonable for you to find a place and whatever you feel is fair compensation. Then he can decide whether to accept your terms, counteroffer or just let you live there for the remainder of the lease.
