Legal Question in Civil Litigation in Ohio

ex has all my personal property

I moved out of my boyfriend's house a couple months ago after I realized he has an extreme anger management problem (and is now in therapy for it) and was extremely verbally abusive on a weekly basis. I moved out and we remaining friends. He said I could leave my stuff at his house until I found my own place ( temporarily staying with family). We got in a fight a few days ago (because he posted a picture of me in lingerie on the internet). Now he won't let me into his house to pack and remove my property. Everything I own is in his house, all of my furniture, clothes, computer, electronics, expensive bike, workout equip, EVERYTHING I've acquired throughout my entire life. He said that he will pack it and put it all outside on the 5th and I can get it then. But that I am not allowed in the house to pack it myself and I'm not allowed to bring anyone with me to help me move. It took me and him 3 days to move it into his house from my previous residence, and yet he expects me single handedly to remove it all in ONE day. If he puts it all outside, anyone will be able to walk up and steal it. And I know he'll miss some stuff, if he doesn't allow me in to check. Even if I had receipts, they'd be in his house. What are my rights?

Re: ex has all my personal property

You do have a problem! Any chance that the two of you will be on better terms in the next few days?

If he does pack your stuff up how is he going to keep you from having someone help you load it into a truck or van? Maybe you will need to hire someone to help you.

Your rights: It is your stuff and if he does not return it or if he damages it he is responsible. You have correctly determined that the tough part will be proving what you had and how much it is worth-That is why I was hoping there may be a window of opportunity when the two of you are back on speaking terms! If that happens, get your stuff out quick.

There are legal remedies such as replevin actions to force a return of your property-etc but these are less than desireable and may be expensive. If this guy was physically abusive you may be able to get some assistance by talking to the police or the city prosecutor.

Call me if you have more questions.

Good Luck!
