Legal Question in Civil Litigation in Ohio

Vehicle ownership after ending relationship

My relationship with my fiance of two years is ending. During that time she bought me a car, I told her I would repay her for the car but she refused saying instead she wanted a ring (engagement) instead. I did provide the ring (which cost more than the car), now that we are splitting up, she says she's keeping the car even though I have the title that's in my name only. I told her I did not want the ring back. Can she keep the car even though I have the title?

Re: Vehicle ownership after ending relationship

Ownership of an auto is based on whose name is on the title. If your name is on the title, you own the car. She will not be able to get plates or get a new title in her name unless you sign for them.

She says that she is keeping the car-I asume that she has possession of the car. Getting it back from her could be a problem. Theoretically you could go to the police but the better move would be to get an attorney to file a replevin action. Any way you look at this it is going to cost you money!

You need to talk directly to an attorney and determine what would be a realistic approach to this little problem. Could be worse! You could have gotten married!

Good luck
