counterfeit check

I received a check in the mail from a sweepstakes, in the amount of $2900.00 made out to me and it was an official check. I took it to a local check cashing store, which cashed the check. Now they are calling me and saying the check was counterfeit and if I do not come in and pay the money back they will turn the matter over to the police department, what will happen if they turn it over to the police? I do not have the funds to pay it back right now.

You would be well advised to work out arrangements with the check cashing outfit to reimburse them for the money which was given to you under a countertfeit instrument.

Your endorsement of the bogus check might well be enough to entangle you in criminal charges if you refuse to make the bad check good.
