What is the LEGAL difference between a Petition and a Complaint?

A petition is one sort of representation before the court, for getting some relief/direction, against the authorities. It is basically of civil nature, but not complusory always a civil.
Whereas a complaint is normally against the breach of some statutory right, amounting or purporting to be of criminal nature.
In criminal action the basis thing is restraining and punishing the wrong doer, whereas a petition is to get some relief from the court for pesonal benefit
