Legal Question in Criminal Law in Arizona

Pursuing a teaching career with a two felonies?!

About 7 years ago I was convicted of battery in the state of NV (my boyfriend at the time got into a fight with a guy and we both ended up getting charged). About a year after that I was charged with possesion of cocaine (with the same boyfriend!) this was in NV as well. Both are considered felonies in that state. I live in California, attend UCIrvine, majoring in Studio Art and hope to get my teaching credentials when I finish. I was young (but not a minor) and did some stupid things while partying in Vegas! I have always wanted to be an art teacher but I don't know if I can ever get these charges taken off or how it all works... Am I crazy? Do I need to start thinking about another career? :(

You might be able to "expunge" your record in Nevada which you should absolutely do and which is better than nothing because it shows you take your rehabilitation seriously. However, expungements will not be sufficient to "clean up" your record for the purpose of your California teaching license.

The convictions you have will not necessarily spell doom to your efforts to qualify as a teacher although they will be an obstacle. You will need to explain in detail what happened so start building your documentation. Any document/record of mitigating factors and rehabilitation will be helpful.

You will need to ascertain just how big an obstacle you will have to deal with. Start asking questions to people who are in the know. I have a contact with someone with the Credentials Commission in Sacramento who should be able to shed some light.

Hope this helps.

"Taken off?" Records are forever. Check to see if NV has any kind of expungement.
