Post Public Records Online

Is it illegal to post public records like court case documents online, so long as SSN, and date-of-birth information is ''blacked out''?

Depends on circumstances and local law. If you're a reporter and it is news, probably not illegal. If you're a vindictive individual out to publish dirt on your spouse, coworker, boss, or the like, probably going to get you in either personal trouble, legal trouble or both. Repost to the specific AR legal area and be more specific as to your situation. Also, remember that what is legal may not be what is smart if it will be offensive, particularly if a judge thinks you did not have a good reason (such as routinely reporting the news) and thinks justice would be best served by somehow punishing you. Local judges have a lot of discretion, particularly in family law matters.

Ask a local lawyer familiar with the local judges before doing this. It will be money well spent, and they may even advise you for free if they think you might become a client.

Ask the question in a catagory that will reach an attorney in AR. FOIA allows certain records to be accessed by the public (redacted, of course). Court case documents may not always be open to the public, however, for various reasons. Something tells me there is more to the story...

Try asking the question in a state-specific catagory such as something related to the documents you wish to publish - like general civil litigation or family law.
