Legal Question in Business Law in California

Online Raffles

A couple of close friends and I came up with a great idea to make a business out of an online raffle. I cannot seem to find a legitimate answer on the internet from sites who claim they know the law. Somebody help! We also plan on giving a certain percentage to a charity or a church.

If you want to stay out of jail, you must comply with a whole series of legal requirements and filings. Hire an attorney and follow his advice. Expect to spend a fair amount of money doing so. Feel free to contact me if interested.

Many people have had raffle ideas because they all come down to people giving money for a hope and it is nice to get money without having to ship a product or invent anything. Your idea is probably workable, but it would require detailed, legal counseling.

Unless they claim to know the law and are also lawyers, I wouldn't pay much attention to their claims. Even if they are lawyers, you'd have to hire them to apply the law to your particular facts to do much good. I would recommend a search online for sweepstakes and raffles lawyers - there are some firms out there that specialize in this sort of thing.
