Is it legal for a contract to have an automatic renewal without some kind of notification to the party that the renewal date is eminent thus allowing the party to opt out.

Read The Friendly Contract. Next time you are asked to sign a contract, try reading it first. If you ever again decide to sign a contract with an "evergreen" clause, send a certified return receipt letter opting out the same day.
