Collecting bad/outadated debt

I have recently been contacted by a collection agency that has purchased my charged-off account from a furniture company. My credit report says it will be on my report till February 2000. That is 7 years after the debt went unpaid. Can the collection agency still try to collect after 7 years?

No, the statute of limitations would be four years at most.
