If my spouse dies, am I responsible for credit that is in her name only?

California is a community property state. To the extent the credit card charges are community debts, you may be responsible for them. Also, if one spouse passes away and leaves behind assets, nothing should be distributed to the surviving spouse (or to any other beneficiary) until all estate liabilities are settled and paid.
