Legal Question in Criminal Law in California

Carrying knives for self defense

In the state of California, is it legal for me to carry knives for self defense? I plan on carrying throwing knives with me in case I need to use them to protect myself.

What weapons/items am I allowed to to carry in the state of CA for self defense purposes?

Thanks.

California Penal Code section 12020 seems to prohibit all that you discuss. Read 12020 and decide for yourself, but your throwing knives are weapons per se and would fall under the dirk or dagger prohibition in 12020.

Why would you carry throwing knives for self defense. If you throw a knife it could then be used as a weapon against you!

Anyway, the law is generally that you are allowed to carry a folding knife with a blade not longer then 3.5 inches concealed. You are allowed to carry a fixed blade knife that exceeds 3.5 inches so long as it is in a sheath and is "completely exposed." That is no part of the handle or sheath is covered by your clothing or concealed.

In either case the blade cannot have to cutting sides or blades ("double bladed knife")

Throwing stars are absolutely a felony.

You should also check municipal ordinances for your area for further limitations in carry weapons and knives.

I would not recommend carrying throwing knives.
