Legal Question in Family Law in California

what do i need to do to adopt my step grand daughter. her grand father and i have had our grand daughter for 4 years under guardianship. her parents will never step up to the plate always in and out of jail/prison and on and off drugs. our grand daughter falls under the special need adoption due to the drug use. We do not feel that the parents need to be involved in her life with there on going issues and as long as we are just guardians they fell they have the right to come in and out of her life when ever they fell the need to. We want to stop all of this and give are grand daughter what they will never do.

You can try to adopt your step-granddaughter, but you will have to obtain the consent of the parents. Or, you can petition to terminate parental rights or to declare the minor free of parental custody and control on grounds of a felony conviction.
