Legal Question in Civil Litigation in California

I bought a car on 7/22/11. I went to register the car and transfer the title on 7/23/11. In doing so i found out the car had not been registered since '09 an has over $700 in late fees. The seller did not disclose this information, i was under the impression the car had not been registered since May 2011 because it 2010 and 2011 tags. Now the seller is not answering my calls. Is there anything i can do to have them pay the fees so i can legally drive the car or not be responsible for the fees myself?

Report the fraudulent tag problem to DMV and request they take action. That is a criminal offense committed by this seller. Sue the seller in small claims court.
