Can i be fired in California for having a medical marijuana card and if so, do i have any viable defenses?

A very good question. California law protects you. However, Federal law does not and gives the employer the right (with some very limited exclusions) to discpline/terminate.

Fired for having the card? Nah. Fired for using, or being under the influence, or talking about it, sure. You are an 'at will' employee. You can be fired any time for any reason, unless it violates a specific law.
