Legal Question in Employment Law in California

A potential employer is requiring that I pay an old charged off debt or show proof that I am paying it before extending a job offer. They will check my credit in six months to make sure that I am making the payments. Paying this debt will create a significant financial hardship at this time. Can they do this?
