When a trustee closes out a living trust following the death of the grantor can a sub trust remain opened or does it automatically close as well?

It depends on the terms of the trust.

The sub-trust is goverened by the terms of the trust document. If, for example the sub-trust says that the sub-trust will continue until the beneficiary reaaches the age of 35, then that's when that sub-trust will terminate.
