Legal Question in Family Law in Delaware

Divorce notification from Husband

My Cousin, who lives in INDIA, she got married to a person who lives in US. The guy who married my cousin had just spent about a week with my cousin, took big amount of money from my cousin and left to US saying that he will take my cousin after couple of months once he finds a house and settles. Now it has been more than a year, never showed up, never contacted. He is living in Delaware and sent a divorce notification for which we have to respond in 20 days. Please advise how we should proceed to get at least some compensation from him because has taken some money during the marriage. How much one lawyer can charge to deal this case. Can you suggest any lawyers or public prosecutors that can deal this case.

One needs to know the religion of both spouses, place where marriage took place, the mode of giving the amount etc. facts are incomplete to formuate an opinion. if your cousin has any proof of marriage, like pictures, video, marriage registration etc..

Re: Divorce notification from Husband

I'm sorry about the whole thing and what happened to your cousin.

American courts follow their own law to settle divorce cases.

You need to respond by hiring an Attorney in Delaware immediately and filing a reply. At your option you can question the Jurisdiction of the court to decide the case since your cousin has not travelled to U.S. However if the court is a Federal District Court it will have jurisdiction over American residents and Nationals of other countries.

American Lawyers charge based on the number of hours spent on a particular litigation by them and by their office and many would also charge on the basis of fixed hours.

If you can please call me up at +91-44-4421794 for me to discuss with you the case and then I will refer you to a Competent Attorney.

Legitimate methods are available to teach a lesson to cheaters fairly easily and for obtaining a compensation.

Thank you,

N. Ramaswami
