Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Florida

I just received a letter stating that " the above referenced case has been docketed in the NJ Superior Court. and will now appear as a lein any time you buy or sell real estate." This is supposedly for a 2001 anesthesia bill for our daughter, which was covered under the FL state funded child insurance. All her medical bills were paid. (we live in FL, but traveled with my husband to NJ on a job assignment.) This is the first that we are hearing about this. This is over 16 years old! I do not think that I have any of the receipts this far back. Is this legal? Is this a scam?

It seems there are some facts missing. However, based on what you've written, it sounds like there is a judgment entered in a state other than New Jersey, for this bill, which the creditor registered in New Jersey. The creditor apparently believes you now reside in New Jersey. If you do not contest the recording of the out-of-state judgment into New Jersey, the judgment will operate as a lien on any real property you might buy or sell in New Jersey, and the judgment becomes enforceable in New Jersey (but only in New Jersey).
