I am a permanent resident and have a "green card". haven't left the country in 20 years and want to go to portugal to visit my family. Could i have a problem coming back to the United States?

Consult a lawyer before you depart the USA, especially if you think that there could be reasons for you not being admitted back to USA (e.g. criminal convictions, etc).
If a green card is not expired and you have a clean criminal record, there normally should be no issues with admission to the USA.
