Legal Question in Immigration Law in Florida
Hi. I am writing on behalf of my friend. Is it possible to change J-1 Visa to a Student or Tourist Visa while the person is already in US with a Work and Travel program (for 3-4 months)?. She was hoping to enter a college or unirversity here in US. Or, if she finds a company that will consider hiring her permanently, can J-1 Visa be changed to a Work Visa? If so, what are the requirements? Please, help. Thank You!

Generally, yes, a change of status to a student visa is possible for someone who is lawfully in USA, if not very easy. Change of status to a work visa is possible too, provided that J1 visa doesn't have a 2-year foreign residency requirement, and she has a bachelor's or higher degree. (However, J1 summer work-travel program for current students - I assume, she has not completed her education yet). If she has a bachelor's degree and the employer petitions for her, and if approved, a work start date is October 1.
Hiring her "permanently" - not likely. This will require a green card process which for most employment visa categories takes several years to complete.
Generally, J-1 summer work-travel is expected to return to her home country after working in USA during summer vacation.

Yes. She should be able to get information about the requirements for a student visa from the university that has accepted her. Regards,
