Legal Question in Real Estate Law in Florida

early lease termination/family emergency

I rented from an apartment complex in Florida but had to leave 2 months prior to the end of my lease due to a family illness that required I move closer to them in Virginia. the apt. complex has sent me letter for remaining rent which I don't have. Is there any legal right I have to not have to pay remainder of lease due to family emergency?

Re: early lease termination/family emergency

A lease is a contract where you and the other party have reciprocal and enforceable responsibilities. Unless there is a clause allowing you to terminate early, you are ordinarily obligated. To keep from destroying your credit, you may want to contact the landlord and negotiate a settlement. They have the obligation to re-rent to someone else to lessen their clai. Sorry that you had unfortunate circumstances. JMC
