Legal Seperation

What exactly is a legal seperation and what rights would I have? What do I need to be careful about. Would this protect our finances?

A legal separation is exactly like a divorce in that issues of child support, division of property, alimony, etc. are addressed. BUT here is the only difference: the parties are still married.
