Other than the options set out by the previously two answers, you may have one more option. You didn't say what type of case you are involved. Nevertheless, it is possible (depending on the type of matter) to go through your homeowner's insurance or renter's insurance to obtain representation. Of course, there are consequences for doing this, including increased premiums and cancellation. However, you may need to weigh those negative consequences with obtaining a lawyer to defend you.

Well, you have exactly two options: hire a lawyer or represent yourself. You already said you can't afford a lawyer. This being America, land of the free and home of the brave, you have the same right as every other citizen to try to handle this yourself. You also have the right to use a pair of pliers to remove a tooth.
Re: Civil suit defense
Where is the case pending--magistrate court (somewhat friendly to litigants without attorneys), state court (may be difficult to defend yourself without an attorney, especially if the other side is represented), or federal (where an attorney is really needed--too many pitfals for a non-lawyer). Also, if the action is against you individually, you are legally allowed to represent yourself. If it is against your company, you probably are not allowed to self-represent.
You say that you cannot afford an attorney, but having an attorney may make the difference between winning and losing, even if only on a technical issue. What kind of a judgment could they get against you if they win? It could be far worse than you may need to spend in attorney's fees.
